Hemodialysis removes waste products such as creatinine and urea, as well as free water from the blood, when kidneys are in renal failure. Hemodialysis is one of three renal replacement therapies (the other two are renal transplant; peritoneal dialysis).
A prescription for dialysis by a nephrologist specifies parameters for dialysis treatment, how many treatments per week and the length of each treatment. In general, the larger the body size of the patient, the more dialysis he/she will need.
